Day 2: Half day city tour – Khuang Si Waterfall – Laos Buffalo Farm (B, G)
After breakfast, you’ll enjoy a short guided tour, starting with the city’s oldest temple, Wat Sene, and the magnificent Wat Xiengthong, known for its classical Laotian architecture with sweeping roofs that reach low to the ground. Next, you’ll visit the Royal Palace Museum, which houses a range of fascinating artifacts, and then head to the Arts and Ethnology Centre to learn about Laos’ many ethnic cultures.
You’ll then join a scheduled tour of the farm, starting every 30 minutes from 9:30 am. You’ll cuddle up to and feed the beautiful 450-kilo buffalos and see the size of their growing crossbreeds! After eating, the buffalos’ next favorite activity is having a bath, and you’ll get to wash and scrub them—it’s like a “day spa” for buffalos. You’ll learn how to milk a buffalo and discover why buffalo milk is so good for you. While the buffalos are the stars of the show, you’ll also enjoy the playful pigs, galloping goats, and rollicking rabbits, which are plenty of fun for both the young and the young at heart. The tour is available daily from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm.
You may also wish to drive to the beautiful Khouangsi Waterfall, where you’ll have the chance to splash around in the turquoise pools or walk along the forest paths. There’s also an opportunity to visit the nearby bear sanctuary, run by Free The Bears Fund Inc.
Later, you’ll climb to the top of Mount Phousi for an enjoyable exploration of the sacred, gilded stupa, as well as a panoramic view of the city at sunset and the Mekong River. The tour concludes with a visit to the famous Night Market, where you’ll find a lovely selection of handmade textiles crafted by local and hill tribe people from the surrounding areas of Luang Prabang. You’ll spend the night in Luang Prabang.
