Destinations: Ho Chi Minh City – Cai Be – Vinh Long – Ben Tre – Ho Chi Minh City.
Duration: 2 Days
Day 1: Ho Chi Minh City – Cai Be – Vinh Long – Ben Tre (L, D, G)
After escaping from Ho Chi Minh City’s urban sprawl, you’ll travel to Cai Lay where you’ll collect your bicycles and enjoy a leisurely, two-hour bicycle ride on peaceful country lanes and quiet roads that pass through local villages and along canals. This offers you several stops on the route seeing seasonal fruits at the tropical plantations such as rambutan, durian, longan, jackfruit, etc…(and they do taste nicer just minutes after being picked from the tree!), perhaps watching farmers harvesting peanuts, visiting a coconut candy factory, a puffed rice factory, stopping at a market to buy fruit, etc.. We will have a great photo opportunity at Cai Be Catholic Church, built in 1929-1932, with its unique steeple atop.
After that, you’ll board our boat for cruise over the Mekong river to Tan Phong island where we have a small sampan paddling on natural waterways, see the tropical gardens on this island before a motor-boat leads you through the myriad of Mekong’s tiny channels to a family house in a canal-side orchard to have lunch.
After lunch, you’ll cycle on small paths under the green canopy alongside water, mostly shared with just pedestrians, other local cyclists and scooters, to discover the rambutan and longan gardens around, see daily life of farmers. Ferry crossing to Ngu Hiep island, you’ll keep cycling on this special durian land, just passing Ngu Hiep main market 4km more, you’ll get a ferry crossing to Tam Binh market where have a coffee break. Then you’ll cycle back to orchards again to Vinh Kim, the area of milk fruit tree. Passing Vinh Kim market, you’ll continue 4km along Rach Gam river to the monument of Rach Gam- Xoai Mut victory. You’ll listen to the battle of QuangTrung King against the Siam navy troop in 1785. Then you’ll have 5 km more on main road to Binh Duc where you’ll take a ferry to Thoi Son island. You’ll spend overnight at a local home stay.
Day 2: Ben Tre – Ho Chi Minh City (B, L, G)
After breakfast, you’ll start cycling on backcountry roads alongside the river, observing the daily life of the locals and feeling lost on winding roads under the green coconut canopy. You’ll also pass the Ba Lai River, a smaller branch of the Mekong, on our way to visit local workshops that produce various coconut-based products for which Ben Tre is famous, such as coconut candy, coconut pandanus waffle, and sponge cake. You’ll then continue our ride downtown for a lunch break
After lunch, you’ll take hammock siesta or bike through local villages. In the afternoon, you’ll return to Ho Chi Minh City where you’ll spend the night.
