HEADHUNTERS AND ORANG UTANGS IN A NATURAL WONDERLAND
For nature lovers, Borneo has practically everything – lush forests dripping with life and home to some of the most diverse wildlife anywhere on Earth.
Approximately eleven million people live on Borneo Malaysia in the large, but less densely populated, states of Sabah and Sarawak. More than half of Sarawak’s residents and about two-thirds of Sabah’s are from indigenous groups. The two states are partly separated by the small country of Brunei.
There are thirty-three ethnic native tribes in Borneo, most notably the legendary heavily tattooed Dyak peoples, headhunters of the past. Each has its distinct ethnic rituals and performances: some still live in traditional ‘longhouses’.
This is the land of jungle, mountains, caves, unique cultures, super beaches, and peace and quiet.
The tourism infrastructure lacks that of the Peninsula but is still more than adequate. Getting around involves long drives around the mountains, but there’s plenty to do and see on the way. Sabah has a railway that runs 83miles (134 km) along the coast. Rivers are still used as the main means of transportation by the natives of these two states.
Borneo Malaysia is mainly comprised of undeveloped land, dense jungles and large river networks. Sabah is very mountainous. The Crocker Range separates the narrow lowland of the northwest coast from the interior and peaks in Mt. Kinabalu 13,450 feet (4,101 m). It also has one of the largest natural caves in the world.
Although deforestation has reduced ground cover, Borneo’s forests remain one of the most bio-diverse on the planet. Fortunately, entry to large areas of the most spectacular rainforest has been banned completely.
The numbers of indigenous, rare and endangered species are enormous with more previously unknown species being frequently discovered.
Borneo has an equatorial climate: high humidity, hot weather and rainfall throughout the year. However, only the east coast has a serious rainy season. Daytime temperatures range between 86°F (30°C) to 95°F (35°C) during the day and 78°F (26°C) to 84°F (29°C) at night.
In Sabah, the wet season lasts from October to February. Sarawak experiences a similar climate with slightly less rainfall and occurs one or two months later. Fortunately, when rain falls it lasts only briefly, mostly in short, sharp bursts.
