Start the tour with 3 nights in the stylish Rosyth Estate, a colonial planter’s bungalow set in a 62 acre working tea and rubber estate; from here the delights of Kandy and the Millennium Elephant Foundation at Pinnawala are both within easy striking distance.
On day 4, head out to the Knuckles Mountain Range one of the most scenic and unexplored regions of Sri Lanka and commence a 3 day guided trek, staying 2 nights in tents and witnessing some stunning scenery that few visitors get to see. After a tough 3 day trek, you are then rewarded with some relaxation in another delightful boutique bungalow nestled deep in the hill country before the second part of your adventure at the Borderlands Adventure Camp.
Here you can choose from a range of activities including canyoning and white water rafting. Your final stop is the super chic Casa Colombo Mirissa on one of the south coast’s most beautiful stretches of beach. From here you will spend a morning on a private boat, whale watching; an afternoon exploring Galle with an eccentric local and another morning on a guided cycle ride up in the hills around Koggala Lake.
Day 1: Colombo – Kegalle
On arrival in Colombo you will be welcomed to Sri Lanka by your private driver and transferred to your hotel near Kegalle a drive of around 2 hours away. On arrival, check-in and relax for the rest of the day.
Day 2: Kegalle
Today is at leisure to relax at your hotel and explore the estate independently. Staff at the hotel will be able to take you on a walk to see the nearby Rosyth Tea Factory and teach you more about the production of tea. Other activities such as cycling or cookery classes can also be arranged.
Day 3: Kegalle – Kandy – Kegalle
Today you will be driven into Kandy and up the hill to the south of the lake to a special vista point, where you can get a bird’s eye view of this remarkable city. The famous Kandy Lake was built in 1807 and forms an attractive centre-piece for the town. Descend into the city centre, where your guide will take you on a walking tour around the famous shopping streets and to points of interest such as the central market and the historic railway station.
Depending on the time of day, you may wish to visit the atmospheric old Red Cross Hall in the centre of the city to see a Kandyan Cultural Show. The shows happen in the late afternoon and feature graceful and rhythmic dancers and drummers demonstrating some traditional Kandyan dance and music and they culminate in an impressive fire-walking display. After the show you can take a short walk along the lakeside with your guide to visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic, one of the most important places in all of Sri Lanka, housing the country’s most sacred religious relic, the tooth of the Buddha.
If you choose to visit in the evening, you will see the evening ‘Puja’ or ceremony which lasts for around one hour and involves lots of noisy drumming and excitement. Most of the ceremony actually takes place behind closed doors, but at the end, the tooth relic is opened to the public gaze. Return to your hotel for the rest of the day or evening at leisure.
The timings of this half day excursion are flexible and can be discussed with your driver on the previous day. The Kandyan Cultural Show and the ‘Puja’ happen once a day in the late afternoon/early evening.
Day 4: Kegalle – Knuckles Mountain Range
After an early breakfast you will be met at your hotel by staff from Moonstone Expeditions and driven out to the Knuckles mountain Range about an hour away.
On arrival in the Knuckles, set off with your guide into the hills, trekking through tea plantations and forest. There will be a stop for a picnic lunch at a scenic viewpoint before continuing on to the ‘Sky Camp’ and settling into your tent. A cooked evening meal will be served tonight under the stars. The trekking distance today is approximately 15 km and will take around 6-7 hours including rest stops and lunch.
Day 5: Knuckles Mountain Range
After breakfast at the camp, continue trekking through the tea plantation trails and pristine forest to the breath-taking Corbett’s Gap viewpoint for stunning views out over the entire range. Continue on your trek to Base Camp where you will settle down for the evening. Again, the trekking distance today is around 15km and will take approximately 7 hours with a stop for a picnic lunch en-route.
Day 6: Knuckles Mountain Range – Kandy
After breakfast trek up to the Knuckles summit through the pigmy forest, high level grassland and cloud forest. On arrival, enjoy the panoramic view before returning to base camp in the afternoon.
This afternoon you will be transferred by road to your hotel in a scenic spot in the outskirts of Kandy.
Day 7: Kandy
Today is at leisure to enjoy your stunning surroundings. There are many scenic walks and hikes that can be taken through the rolling tea plantations nearby.
Day 8: Kandy – Kitulgala
After breakfast, you will be met by your driver and transferred to Kitulgala, a couple of hours drive away. On arrival, check into the Borderlands Adventure Camp and prepare for an action packed afternoon.
After checking into your tent and lunch at the camp, you will have the opportunity this afternoon to indulge in a range of adventure activities. Included in your stay are a range of activities to choose from which include white water rafting, canyoning and mountain biking. Excursions are operated with an expert adventure guide and are on a shared basis with other people staying at the lodge.
Day 9: Kitulgala
After breakfast this morning, you have a full day to sample the adventure activities offered at Borderlands. These include white water rafting, canyoning, mountain biking, trekking and kayaking. Excursions are operated with an expert adventure guide and are on a shared basis with other people staying at the lodge.
Day 10: Kitulgala – Mirissa
After breakfast this morning, your driver will meet you at the camp and transfer you to the south coast resort town of Mirissa.
Afternoon at leisure: This afternoon is at leisure to enjoy your luxurious surroundings and the beautiful beach.
Day 11: Mirissa
Today is at leisure to enjoy your luxurious surroundings and the beautiful beach. Alternatively there are many scenic walks and hikes that can be taken nearby.
Day 12: Mirissa – Galle – Mirissa
After an early breakfast, you will be taken from your hotel to the jetty for a shared Whale and Dolphin watching tour. Mirissa is one of the best spots in Sri Lanka to view Whales and Dolphins and you will be taken out on a shared boat this morning in search of these fantastic and enormous creatures. Return to the mainland in the late morning.
This afternoon you will be transferred from Mirissa to Galle where you will be taken on an entertaining walking tour of the fort by a charismatic local. Take in the maze of hidden back streets, meet local characters, reveal secret spots and explore extravagant 18th century merchant houses. The walks last around an hour and can take in a number of themes, depending on the particular interests of the group. Juliet’s tours are very much designed to get you underneath the skin of this atmospheric fort city with an entertaining and knowledgeable local as your guide.
Return to your hotel later in the afternoon for an evening at leisure, en-route you will drive past Weligama and if lucky may catch a glimpse of some of the famous stick fishermen that ply their trade there.
Day 13: Mirissa – Kogala- Mirissa
After breakfast, you will be taken from your hotel to nearby Kogala, from where you will commence a private cycling tour. After picking up your comfortable bikes, set off on a morning cycle ride from the beach to Kahanda Kanda, a decidedly decadent hotel set on a hill surrounded by teas plantations. The scenic 18km ride takes you through plantations and local villages. On arrival, you can enjoy a delicious 4 course lunch in the hotel restaurant.
After lunch, return to your hotel in Mirissa for the afternoon at leisure to relax or on the beach.
Day 14: Sri Lanka Departure
